VHF Radio Communication with the Bridge Tender:
Alert the bridge operator on the VHF that you need an opening for the bridge in your area. Let them know the location and description of your boat so they can spot you on the water. If in a group, each boat should call in and make a request. If the Bridge tender does not pick up your call, continue to call.
If they still don’t reply, you can use a horn to sound one prolonged blast followed within three seconds by one short blast. The bridge tender should be acknowledged with the same signal. If he responds with five short blasts, there’s a problem. You should respond with five short blasts to indicate your understanding that you cannot proceed.
The bridge tender will signal one long and one short blast that they’re opening. Don’t proceed until you see that their opening is complete. Also, be aware of any boats on the other side with a current pushing them toward the bridge; they have the right of way. Advise the bridge tender once it is clear.
