Bird Key is a barrier island in Sarasota Bay, south of the John Ringling Causeway, between mainland Sarasota and St. Armands Key. Originally a small barrier island connected to the Ringling Causeway by a tree lined causeway of its own, it was the home of John Ringling North, nephew of Circus Magnate, John Ringling. Created by dredge and fill in the late 1950s, it is approximately 250 acres of one of the most prestigious residential areas on Florida’s West Coast.

Big Pass - Gateway to the Gulf
Though Big Sarasota Pass is deep and fairly wide past Sarasota Point, as the image above suggests, its outer confluence with the Gulf of Mexico is very shoal and subject to constant changes. The image above is a view to the north looking over the inner portion of Big Sarasota Pass, with Bird Key visible in the middle of the harbor. Off to the left (northwest) is Lido Key with its beautiful white sand beaches. The city of Sarasota is off near the horizon where the taller white buildings can be seen. Big Pass is an convenient entrance to Sarasota Bay and the ICWW.
